Akshaya Patra conducts Fighting hunger, feeding minds
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, held a media orientation entitled "Fighting hunger, feeding minds” in Gandhinagar.
Media representatives from both print and electronic media attended the workshop. As part of the workshop media persons were taken a tour to Akshaya Patra’s state of the art kitchen located at Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat.
The objective of the workshop was to direct focus through the media to hunger and encourage debate on the way it impedes education. The workshop also served to help journalists cover socially sensitive stories such as hunger in an informed and accurate manner.
Speaking on the occasion Sri Jaganmohan Dasa, the unit President of Akshaya Patra, Gandhi Nagar said "When society comes together we have the power to bring about real change in the lives of millions of children who go hungry and are unable to attend school or assimilate what they learn in school. Our partnerships with the mid day meal programme of the government is helping to boost nutrition and build sustainable solutions to hunger."
Speaking specifically on Akshaya Patra's presence in Gujarat, Dasa added that The Akshaya Patra Foundation in Gujarat is planning to cover places like Dante and Amerigarh near Ambaji and this support will be coming from Ambaji temple trust. The rural model of operations involving rural women and decentralized model of cooking and distribution of food will be replicated in these areas.
Additionally, Akshaya Patra is also reaching out to 1200 patients everyday providing lunch and dinner to the in-patients of Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. Salt free, oil free and diabetic diets are provided to the patients. Based on the success of Civil Hospital intervention, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has approached Akshaya Patra to replicate the same model and cater to another 3 hospitals totaling to 1500 patients. These hospitals are VS, LG and Sharadaben hospitals. The training workshop was conducted through an interactive methodology including experience sharing, case studies and ineraction, group discussions and presentation. The workshop was facilitated by experienced journalist and international media trainer Jasvinder sehgal.
